“In my 30+ years in cycling I have had many opportunities to see extremely physically talented athletes fail to live up to their potential because they were never able to balance their physical talent with the mental side of sport. During that same time I have seen good athletes have championship winning performances due in part to their mental strength. Now more than ever, with so much information available to everyone instantaneously, many athletes tend to look everywhere except to themselves for improvement.

Carrie Cheadle’s “On Top Of Your Game” is a fantastic resource for every level of athlete from weekend warrior to World Champion who is looking to strengthen their mental game and thus improve performance by looking within. With an easy to read format, “Take-Aways” & “Tools” at the end of each chapter and the “...there is no right or wrong way” approach, Cheadle definitely has a winning book on her hands. Drawing on personal experience as well as the experiences of the many athletes she has worked with, a nice balance of real life and textbook examples is achieved to make easy understanding for everyone.”

“I started this book while going through an injury and when the first few pages opened up with a personal story by Carrie of overcoming an injury herself, I knew I was going to benefit from reading the rest! The way she uses her own journey as an athlete, and combines that with her extensive studies in sport psychology, makes this book a 'must have' for any level of athlete. We just don't give enough credit to the power of the mind. Don't be lazy! Read this wonderfully written piece of work and start the process now.”

On Top of Your Game Mental Skills to Maximize Your Athletic Performance eBook Carrie Cheadle

After a couple epic fails during XC mountain bike races I thought I might need a little psychological boost so I picked up Carrie Cheadle's book, On Top of Your Game. I heard about the book during an interview she gave to Mountain Bike Radio. In the book, the author addresses common mistakes that athletes of any sport can relate to but I found them to have relevance for bike racing. The premise is that while we all prepare physically for our sports, we tend to forget about the psychological aspect until something goes wrong. Her book contains a series of mental exercises that can alleviate such problems, mostly by fixing our focus in the right direction.

Luckily I'm long past the anxiety shakes that hindered my first few races so there were chunks of this book that didn't apply to me. However, there were some gems that hit my issues right on the money. One was my tendency to create "Secret Goals." The author defined that habit as the hidden agenda that we carry into a competition. Reading this section cracked open one of my big problems. With an overactive imagination that focuses too much on outcome and not enough on "Playing" I was setting myself up with unrealistic expectations and thus constantly falling short. Another great notion was the acknowledgement that competition has a natural "Yin/Yang" quality that many of us forget during the good times and remember harshly during the slumps. Carrie writes that if we accept the inevitability of that emotional roller coaster it becomes easier to flow with it.

I read this book end to end and it took a while because I'd read, pause, think and do the mental exercises for each concept. However, most people would probably find it more useful to pick a chapter that jumps out at you. None of us have all of these problems but all of us have likely had some of them. If I have any criticism it would be that while the concepts can be applied across the spectrum of sports, I wish there had been more about bike racing. The shortage of specific examples forces the reader to imagine how it applies to their situation rather than reading about another person facing their exact same difficulty. It is a practical read that focused my mind for another season on the bike, encouraging me to have fun and set more realistic goals.

I came across this book after seeing one of Carrie's excellent Training Peaks Webinars on YouTube. I love her approach and this book, as the information is very practical. I applied what I learnt from a worksheet exercise at a recent national level championship event achieving a great outcome!
I thought that tis was an excellent book. It covers so many aspects of training that the author strategically places and makes for a good read if a person really wants a coaches perspective. It's also obvious Carrie Cheadle knows what she's talking about. For someone without any knowledge of training it may not be a good choice but for those in an intermediate to advanced knowledge of training the book is a real gem.
Love this book! I have personally met Carrie and have great respect for what her book has done for my athletes, one in particular; has become a different person and athlete. More confident and much happier. If you haven't read this book, it is a must read. This is a book that has to be used and Carrie's additional resources on her webpage support this book nicely.
This book is so easy and fun to read. It provides thought provoking exercises that prepared me for the ups and downs of athletic endeavors. It helped me calm pre-race nerves and to get through many races with a positive mental outlook and attitude. Highly recommend this book to anyone who participates in sports. It will help you condition your mind just like you condition your body- a key piece of training that is often overlooked by athletes.
Having struggled for years with performance anxiety, when I committed to fly overseas to compete in the British Indoor Rowing Championships this fall I was determined to find a way to make sure race day nerves did not make it into a fiasco. Carrie's knowledge of the subject is extensive, but what I found most helpful were the techniques she suggested for what to actually DO, in a practical step by step way, to prepare mentally for competition. I was able to enjoy the pre-race time watching my friends compete, and use the last minute emotions as fuel for a very successful outcome. I plan to use these ideas again, not only for athletic events, but for solo musical performances as well (violin.) I highly recommend this book.
Carrie Cheadle gives clear exercises on how top performing athletes can identify their struggles and self-soothe anxiety and concerns. She has quite a number of useful tips on moving people from thinking negatively about their performances both past and future. She also shares some personal stories from her own life, helping the reader know that his or her concerns are common; even the author struggles with them! Easy to read and understand. The last chapter is a summary of all the previous ones, and can be used as a quick "Cliff Notes" version after the reader has read the entire book, or as a primer.
Many authors merely write about topics after doing research. Carrie writes from a place of experience and wisdom. Often times you pick up book and get about 10 pages in and wonder why you even bothered. This is one of those that you'll have a hard time putting down and until your done. Not only will you not be disappointed, you'll learn how to get be "on Top of your Game"
