Contrary to the openly stated of many in the latter 20th and early 21st centuries, ghouls, ghosts, and other horrors frequenting the nightmares of those who consider themselves to be otherwise rational and "scientifically" minded, are just as real and frightening today, as they were in the 19th and preceding centuries. In "Macabre2" Sherrod Colsne finds himself confronted with circumstances and events that shatter his own steely sensibilities.

"The Weerwolf Problem" (Dutch spelling) forces Monty Weston, assistant, friend, and de facto son to Colsne, to reassess all that he had come to accept about the monsters that had once been part and parcel of most people's belief systems prior to The Industrial Revolution, and the subsequent explosion of "scientific" discovery. No less nerve rattling is the truth behind a series of freakish animal deaths in Upstate New York, found in "The Golden Dart."

Macabre2 (Sherrod Colsne Mysteries) eBook John Yantiss Reviews

Decent Sherlockian pastiche mysteries. Written in a classic style of those mysteries they emulate with a sleuthing duo where the one records the cases they encounter that the other, the brilliant Sherrod Colsne, solves. The main problem with these stories is that they are heavily written with an old-fashioned dialogue, Victorian if you will, and as I first started reading I assumed they were period pieces until I was abruptly jarred by being placed in 1995. The stories never really rang true after that. Instead of being quirky Victorian gentlemen, they read as pretentious, affected fakers.

1) The Weerwolf Problem - In between cases Sherrod recounts one of his first cases from his younger days to Monty. This is a typical werewolf story about Dutch descendants thus the spelling of "weerwolf" in the title. Well-told and enjoyable. The reveal is hardly surprising though. (3/5)

2. The Golden Dart - Classic Holmesian as, the story starts with an elderly lady showing up at the duo's home frantic for Colsne's help as animals at her ancestral home are dying horribly agonizing paralytic deaths and she fears it spells doom for herself. The pair arrive to find a suitably gothic mansion complete with stables and secret rooms. I liked this story much better as it wasn't a paranormal but a proper mystery. I like my mysteries to be solvable. (4/5)
Macabre 2 consists of two (very) short stories starring detective Sherrod Reynard (means fox in French) Colsne and his associate Monty Weston. If the names call to mind Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, that's only because that's exactly what author John Yantiss means to do. These two tales, one about a mysterious weerwolf (Dutch spelling as the afflicted family is of Dutch origin) and the other about a grisly and mysterious series of human and animal deaths are set in today's world. Colnse and Weston appear to be bachelors (there is a preceding novel that I have not read), are wealthy (at least Colsne is, as he has at least a servant and a cook) live in a large Manhattan brownstone, and associate with upper crust of New York society.

Both short stories are written in an archaic style that strongly emulates that of Conan Doyle, and Colsne, Weston and everyone else speak as if they were living in 1880. The two mysteries are very different - the weerwolf one has (obviously) a supernatural bent while the other is a more standard mystery. Both could easily have been cases on which the original Holmes and Watson worked, despite the fact that they are set in 2015 rather than 125 or so years earlier. Both are also far simpler than the tales spun by Conan Doyle, and they are so short that there isn't room for the author to lay out hidden clues that will allow the reader to solve the mystery.

Probably an enjoyable hour or so for Conan Doyle fans. For others, it was OK but not anything special.

Disclaimer I received an electronic copy of this book in return for an honest and no-strings-attached review.
Having just finished up solving a mystery, Colsne is unusually talkative in the first story, The Weerwolf Problem. He wants to tell Monty, his sidekick, about a case he took on thirteen years ago.

Receiving a call in person from Eustace Trevelyan Walford and his father-in-law Johan Staas Vandermeer VI, a very wealthy man, Colsne eventually gets the story out of them how animals have been going missing and subsequently found dead, mauled and partially eaten by a large predator. Just four days ago a young girl disappeared. This is not the first time things like this have happened in this area. In the mid 19th century many people had disappeared and Johan's family were accused. With modern technology it is now possible to do DNA testing. What do those results reveal?

You will read both 'weerwolf' (Dutch spelling) and 'werewolf' in this story.

In the second story, The Golden Dart, Monty is astonished to be woken up at 4am by Rivers, Colsne's butler. Who is the visitor that Colsne wants Monty to meet? An eighty two year old lady, Miss Katrina Bremner. She is very concerned about animals dying all of which are found rigid with contorted positions. There are never any puncture holes or wounds on the victim nor signs of having ingested any poison into their stomachs. Her only relative is Reginald Hoch, her grandnephew who she does not like. Is her life in danger? Can Colsne figure out who and how?

Monty Weston is Colsne's sidekick. Colsne is a private investigator akin to Sherlock Holmes, residing in New York City in the "granite palace". The characters he deals with are upper class so characters with a vast amount of money.

These two, well-written stories are totally different but give you a glimpse into how Colsne's works and deciphers the mysteries presented to him. The characters of Colsne and Monty are not developed in these short stories due to the fact that the author really developed them in his full length novel, Murder by Bequest. In that novel you really get to know the characters in much greater depth. However, it is not necessary to have read Murder by Bequest to enjoy this book as the stories are completely separate.

Please note that I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
