I'M NOT MUHAMMAD chronicles the paranoia that many American felt during the dark and momentous days following 9/11. In that atmosphere of high alert, Yusuf Alsawari, a graduate student married to an American woman, is swept up by mysterious government agents. His civil rights suspended and unable to contact his family, he quickly finds himself living a nightmare. In Trask's telling, Alsawari's story is by turns harrowing, horrific, comic, and always moving. I'm Not Muhammad is a powerful first novel that is, on the one hand, a deeply felt personal narrative about the tragic consequences for the victims of extraordinary rendition; on the other, a disturbing cautionary tale about America in the 21st Century.

I'm Not Muhammad attempts to show what it is like to be a Muslim in post-9/11 America. Based on what I have gleaned from reading non-fiction books on the Middle East, author Jason Trask's details seem to be quite accurate.

Yusuf Alsawari is a devout Muslim and a native-born American living in New York City with his wife, Ruth. The crisis begins when at her mother's deathbed Ruth declares herself a born-again Christian, renouncing Islam. Yusuf is mortified and decides to leave her. The World Trade Center attacks provide a seemingly good cover for him to simply disappear, pretending to have perished in the rubble. He re-emerges as Muhammad Muhammad, determined to lead a new life.

But then he is kidnapped--hooded, whisked away, and imprisoned without explanation. As an Arab he is automatically suspect, though no one tells him what crime he is thought to have committed as Muhammad Muhammad. Meanwhile, no one misses him because Yusuf is presumed to be dead. Despite his protestations that "I'm not Muhammad," he is placed in a jumpsuit for days on end, not even allowed to use a toilet. The consequences are described in cringe-worthy detail several times, whereas once would have served well enough.

Yusuf's imprisonment without trial forms the core of the story. Will he remain a prisoner forever? Will he ever see Ruth again? What will happen to his faith in Allah?

Jason Trask's novel is well-written and well-researched, and offers a useful glimpse into Islam and some of the darker corners of American security. There are, though, a couple of problems with the story. A good fictional struggle should have both a protagonist and an antagonist where there is some hope for a fair fight. Here the antagonist is an impersonal, crushing system represented by no one in particular, and Yusuf never has a chance. His only hope is that Allah will rescue him. The other problem is that the resolution comes too soon. For the last ten percent of the novel, the tension is gone.

Very depressing book. No idea what the writer had in mind when it was written. To portray what? A confused, muddled person with conveniently applied ideas based on the idea of how in hindsight the character wishes they did differently? i finished the book wondering if i was missing some chapters.
I didn't like the main character, who was dishonest in his personal life and diligent in seeking ways to justify that dishonesty; so I didn't care what happened to him. And I was irritated by what I perceived to be covert "preaching" for Islam in several places through-out the book. If the purpose of this story was to generate sympathy for Islamists caught up in the post 9/11 excesses (a very worthwhile goal, too, in my opinion) this book couldn't have done a worse job. Although not guilty of the terrorism of which he was accused, his waste of space as a human being made me unsympathetic in the extreme to his eventual fate. AND....the book was ambiguous at the very end. Which I always hate! in any book.
I really enjoyed the layout of the story as well as the dedication to explaining the terrible situations an individual could have endured during the time of 9/11.
Interesting twist on the Muslim.
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. In fact, I went looking for other books by this author and could not find any. This book is about terrorism after 9/11. This book is about all the doubts and fears we hold close to our hearts... like what our country does to suspicious characters, how a person fits the mold. It's scary. Read this! and to the author, write more.
I'm Not Muhammad takes the question Who am I? to a different level. Taking the question on a public level, the personal runs underground; taking the question on a personal level, the public level runs underground. One affects the other. And the perception of a state, an ideology, a cause can step into a life and change it utterly. Have that occur at a moment in time when one's own identity is in a resurrection and you get a rendition. Terrifying in what those who are authorized to have power can do; disarming in what a person who is undergoing changes must do.
Set in the aftermath of 9/11, Yusus/Muhammad finds the journey towards his self perilouis. Disowned by his own family, dispossessing his wife and his own family Yusuf/Muhammad is in exile -- forced political exile, chosen personal exile.
Terrifying in the description of how governments search for truth -- "What is truth?" Mostly what governments want it to be, what causes manipulate it to be, what generally happens when any position with an agenda (are there any others?) moves into action. Heart rending in how Yusuf loses his former self to embraces his new self, loses his wife, his life, his home. The motif of rebirth is not a Christian monopoly.
By the end we are certain Yusuf is Muhammad but not certain how that means. We are certain, also(the way we are certain that some places hold ghosts) he is being watched by authorities either democratic or terroristic -- it is difficult to know the difference.
Well-written. Engaging. Sometimes early in the novel terrifying. Always, though, an honesty of character and story that is not compromised. A good, troubling read.
This is the story of a man who's suspected to be a terrorist. He was captured and sent to Egypt, where he languished for a year or so before being finally released. While in prison he worried about he wife, Ruth, who is a Christian, and it often seems as if Yusuf, the main character will become a Christian. This was a overall great story. This book was closely edited it seemed, and it was very easy to read and sometimes a bit humorous. I read this book in only two days, despite the length of pages! This is a nice book for if you're just sitting around and you want to read something exciting.

NOTE I bought the edition of this book free at a price drop.
